Data Science at Scale

Data Science at Scale is a Coursera specialization built for learners who already have some programming experience and want to work with large data sets. Offered by the University of Washington and taught through the IBM Skills Network, the program covers Python for data analysis, Pandas and NumPy for data manipulation, Matplotlib for data visualization, and SQL for data science. Machine learning with scikit-learn and a capstone project round out the core topics.

The approach is hands-on and project-based. Learners work through modules that teach data manipulation at scale, practical predictive analytics, and how to communicate data science results. The capstone project asks you to apply the skills to a real-world data problem, building a portfolio piece that demonstrates you can handle end-to-end data science tasks.

By the end of the specialization you will be able to manipulate large data sets with Python and SQL, build and evaluate machine learning models using scikit-learn, create visualizations with Matplotlib, and complete a capstone project that solves a genuine data challenge. These are concrete outcomes you can list on a resume or discuss in an interview.

The specialization is intermediate level. You should already be comfortable with basic programming; the material assumes roughly two college courses of experience and some familiarity with databases. The pace is self-paced, and the suggested completion time is about one month, though Coursera notes that most learners take around five months.

Honest limits: the course does not teach deep theory of statistics or advanced mathematics from scratch. If you need foundational math, you will need additional study. Learners who are complete beginners in programming may find the assignments challenging and might start with a beginner-friendly introduction to data analytics before enrolling.
