What a teacher actually does
A realistic day involves lesson planning, delivering content, assessing student work and updating records. Primary teachers focus on foundational subjects; secondary and PGT teachers specialise in a single subject. They report to a head teacher, principal or academic coordinator. Increasingly, teachers also manage digital tools, upload recorded lessons and track attendance on learning management systems.
How to become one — the qualification route
The qualification route in India
- Complete Class 12 in any stream.
- Enrol in a two-year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) programme — required for teaching in government and most private schools.
- Register with the state Teacher Eligency Test (TET) body and clear the TET exam to become a certified teacher.
- For postgraduate teaching (PGT), a Master’s degree in the subject plus B.Ed is the standard path.
