What a engineer actually does
A realistic day depends on the branch. A civil engineer might visit a construction site, check material quality and update drawings. An electrical engineer could design wiring layouts, test circuits and coordinate with contractors. A software engineer writes code, runs tests and deploys updates. Most report to a senior engineer or project manager. Tools include CAD software, project management apps and testing equipment. Documentation and safety checks are routine across all branches.
How to become one — the qualification route
The qualification route in India
- Complete 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
- Appear for entrance exams such as JEE Main, state-level tests or university-level exams.
- Enrol in a B.Tech or B.E. programme (four years) or a diploma (three years) approved by AICTE.
- Register with the state council of engineers if required for practice.
- Clear any branch-specific licensing or certification exams.
