About this course

Graphic design shapes how we see ideas, products and messages. The California Institute of the Arts offers a beginner-level Specialization on Coursera that builds core skills through five practical courses. Learners start with Fundamentals of Graphic Design, then move into Introduction to Typography, Introduction to Imagemaking, Ideas from the History of Graphic Design and finish with a capstone project called Brand New Brand. Each course runs for about four weeks and moves at a self-paced speed, so a full completion takes roughly two months.

This Specialization takes a hands-on approach. Video lessons walk through each principle and then ask you to apply it immediately. In Fundamentals of Graphic Design you explore composition, color and shape. Introduction to Typography teaches typefaces, hierarchy and legibility. Introduction to Imagemaking encourages you to experiment with materials and create original assets. Ideas from the History of Graphic Design places current work in context, and the final course, Brand New Brand, asks you to develop a visual identity from scratch for a made-up company. By the end you will have produced logos, typography systems, image collections and a complete brand guide.

At the end of the Specialization you will be able to create a cohesive visual identity, design effective typography, produce original imagery and present a finished brand project. You will also have a portfolio piece that shows the full design process from brief to final assets. The courses are pitched at beginners, so no prior experience is assumed, but assignments do require access to a computer and, for some tasks, Adobe Creative Suite programs such as Illustrator, InDesign or Photoshop.

Honest limits: the Specialization does not teach 3D modeling, motion graphics or web design. If you are looking for those skills, the Fundamentals of Graphic Design course on Coursera (7 hours 54 minutes, rating 4.8) covers the basics in a shorter format. The SmartPhone Graphic Design course on Udemy (rating 4.2, 30,284 learners) is free and focuses on mobile-only creation. The AI Powered Graphic Design - Midjourney, Firefly, GPT, Gemini course on Udemy (rating 4.4) introduces generative tools but does not replace hands-on fundamentals.

This Graphic Design Specialization is a solid entry point for Indian learners who want a structured, university-backed introduction to visual design. It is self-paced, so you can fit study around work or college, and the certificate is UGC-DEB recognized when completed through Coursera.
