Career as a Graphic Designer

Makes the visual side of a brand work — layout, type, colour and image.

Also called: visual designer, creative designer

Graphic designers make the visual side of a brand work — layout, type, colour and image. In India, they work across advertising agencies, in-house design teams, publishing houses and freelance platforms. Entry-level roles often require a portfolio more than a degree, though many employers ask for a diploma or degree in visual communication or design.

What a graphic designer actually does

A realistic day involves creating layouts, editing images, preparing files for print or web, and meeting briefs from art directors or clients. Tools used include Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. Junior designers report to senior designers or creative leads, and freelancers report directly to clients.

How to become one — the qualification route

Qualification route in India

The qualification route in India typically starts with a secondary-school pass, followed by a degree or diploma in visual communication, graphic design or fine arts. Some employers accept a strong portfolio in lieu of a degree. No national licence is required to practice, but registration with the Indian Society of Advertisers or similar bodies can help freelancers. Exams are set by the institutions offering the courses.

Which online courses actually help

What online courses add on top of the licence/degree

Online courses help fill specific skill gaps — Adobe Photoshop for photo editing, Illustrator for vector logos, Figma for UI mockups or Motion Graphics for animated assets. A course cannot replace a licensed qualification if one is required by an employer, and human review is mandatory for regulatory claims.
