A realistic day involves gathering requirements from stakeholders, mapping current processes and translating needs into clear specifications for developers. Tools often include SQL for data extraction, Excel for analysis and diagramming software for process maps. Business Analysts typically report to a Project Manager or Product Owner and work in Agile sprints alongside developers and designers.
How to become one — the qualification route
The qualification route in India
Most employers expect a bachelor’s degree in any discipline, though degrees in commerce, statistics or computer science are common. No statutory licence is required to work as a Business Analyst, but the IIBA® ECBA™ certification is widely recognised. Many professionals enter the role after completing online courses that cover SQL, Excel and requirements-gathering frameworks.
