Career as a Financial Analyst

Models what the numbers will do next, and explains why.

Also called: FP&A analyst, equity research analyst

Financial Analysts model what the numbers will do next and explain why. In India, they work across banks, mutual funds, corporate finance teams and equity research firms. Entry roles typically require strong quantitative skills and familiarity with spreadsheets, as most firms expect candidates to build models from day one.

What a financial analyst actually does

A realistic day involves building financial models, running valuations, updating forecasts and preparing reports for senior staff. Tools include Excel, financial calculators and data terminals. They typically report to a senior analyst or finance manager, and the work is deadline-driven around month-end closes and quarterly results.

How to become one — the qualification route

Qualification route in India

Most Financial Analyst roles require a bachelor's degree in commerce, economics or mathematics. Many aspirants follow with the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) programme, which is self-study but requires passing three levels. Some employers accept professional certificates in financial modelling or ESG investing as entry credentials.

Stage What it takes What you can do after it
Degree B.Com, B.A. Economics or B.Sc. Mathematics Analyst trainee roles in finance teams
CFA Level I Self-study; pass the exam; basic financial modelling Junior analyst positions; articulation to Level II
Professional certificate Course completion; Excel or Python for finance Specialist roles in ESG or equity research

Regulated professions have statutory entry requirements. Always confirm current rules with the relevant council or university before enrolling anywhere.

Which online courses actually help

What online courses genuinely add

Online courses add practical skills — financial modelling, calculator use and ESG frameworks — on top of a degree or CFA path. They cannot replace a licensed qualification where one is required, such as the CFA charter. Human review is mandatory for regulatory claims.
